What does the name “North Dakota” mean to you?

I kinda get a kick out of coming up with a word or phrase that turns into what is called “ click bate”. I find this one more interesting because it truly does have a meaning, a meaning that actually has, I’ll say, a backup to its meaning. As a child my family traveled to states or areas that are a bit remote, areas that have a name to themselves, farm country. When you travel in these very remote agricultural or livestock regions you’ll find, as you’re driving on the lonely two lanes, a friendly wave from the oncoming pickup or dust covered vehicle. Living in the city I guess you may have this reserved feeling come about you that something isn’t right about that. Why did that person just raise their hand at me? What did that mean?

Howdy!

The words, or the name North Dakota, is a Native American Sioux word that roughly means “friend” or “ally”. As I entered the northern Minnesota region, and crossed into far northern North Dakota, I only saw these dust covered vehicles and trucks hauling what I suspect is livestock feed, with each driver of said vehicle raising their hand in a gesture to say “howdy”, or “hello”. Seems, everyone’s a friend here.

Where you at?

I’ve stopped for a few days at a State campground just outside Cavalier, ND, named Icelandic State Park. I’m about 15 miles from the Canadien border in far northeast North Dakota. Rightly named I guess because the area was populated by immigrants from the Scandinavian country’s. In fact, potatoes are still a major crop here and if I understand the history of migration, the potato famine pushed most of these immigrants from that region to a place called the new world, for a reason.

I’d say the stop has definitely panned out as the weather is pretty crummy. My Saturday was mostly nice, got in a 4+ mile hike through a woodland and prairie restoration area, but by dinner time that came crashing down. A strong cold front came through with high winds and heavy rain which continued through the night. Today, cold and rain, they say a high of 59f. Good time to stop I guess cause tomorrow it’s on to better things.

Back to some further meaning of the words North Dakota. Tomorrow I’m headed to the International Peace Garden which covers land on both sides of the US and Canadian border. (https://peacegarden.com/). The Garden was created in 1932 as a representation between Canada and the US on the premise of peace, conservation, and friendship. Let that promise never be broke.
